I was speaking to a pal of mine recently who shared that a shopper of hers was constantly changing her mind.  Her business was successful, but she was also excited about several coaching groups and whenever she received feedback from the coaches, she would change her mind about something.

This prompted a whole conversation around leadership and what determines a pacesetter:  Title, level of success, followers?

We went round and around on this conversation.  It’s too bad we didn’t have a replica of Step Up: Lead in Six Moments that Matter by Henry Evans ( @HenryJEvans ) and Colm Foster ( @DrColmFoster ).  If we had would have learned just a few things that I’m going to share with you here.

What’s In It For The Small Business Owner Or Solopreneur

Every time I pick up a review copy of a book, I ask myself, what’s going to a small business owner get from this book – especially if it kind of feels like it’s written for a company audience.

Step Up is a book that’s written for leaders at every level; corporate, small business or even for volunteers.  In case you are working with a minimum of a different person – this can be a book that you’ll like to explore.

I give the authors kudos for sharing my belief that leadership isn’t for every person.  As you’ll see within the book, being a frontrunner requires some very specific behaviors and talents; most prominent inside the book is the skill of being the “observer” of your individual behavior and the behavior of others.

Some folks try this naturally, and the remainder of us require a little of practice.  For those people that require some practice, Step Up will provide you with the tools you’ll ought to – at least – improve your leadership skills and even perhaps change the arena.  But that result relies on you.

The Key To Leadership Success Is Spotting Those Leadership Moments

The authors center around helping you notice what they call “leadership moments” and the full book is written around these very valuable skills.  In the course of the book, they’ve also included handy QR codes that lead you to additional content reminiscent of assessments and videos which will offer you examples that can assist you integrate what they may be teaching.

Here are the six moments which are included in Step Up:

  1. Using anger intelligently:  Instead of viewing anger as something to be avoided, the authors ask you to note when you’re feeling it after which notice that anger or upset is basically what you’re feeling when what’s happening goes against your commitment to a particular outcome.
  2. Recognize and cope with “terminal politeness:”  We all wish to be liked, the question is; are you letting terminal politeness undermine your ability to steer?
  3. Make decisions when nobody is making them:  A leader steps as much as make difficult decisions and takes responsibility for them – that’s why you’re the leader.  This chapter lets you embrace the potential for being wrong.
  4. Take ownership when others are externalizing the issue:  Are you brave enough to possess-as much as being component to the difficulty?  The right way to observe when you’re contributing to the difficulty and transform it right into a leadership victory.
  5. Identifying and leveraging pessimism:  If you notice pessimism to your organization, turn it around and notice where you might be being pessimistic.  After you understand yourself, you may understand those around you.
  6. Inspiring others to action:  This is the ancient leadership role.  During this portion of the book, you’ll how one can recognize while you and others are stuck in unproductive conversations and actions.

The forward of this book is written by Marshall Goldsmith, management guru and author of What Got You Here Won’t Get You There  and he praises the authors for taking the complex topic of leadership and simplifying it in a fashion that leaders in all walks of life can embrace.

The question that you have to wonder is, “Do i need to read another book about leadership?” Or perhaps, “How is that this leadership book any different?”

I can let you know, I wasn’t really into reading another book about leadership.  What you might want to really be asking of yourself is, “Is this all I’m as much as on the earth?”
